Location, Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, Brazil

Lençóis has only been open to tourism for a few years making it relatively untouched and almost unknown to Americans. Those who do visit tend to stay in the neighboring towns and hike in for a few hours at a time, retiring to the comfort of their hotels at night.

Although the terrain is incomparable in its beauty, like most beautiful things, it protects itself with a rugged, almost impenetrable terrain. The unrelenting heat of the sun and the mercurial landscape leave Lençóis devoid of most living creatures. A physical confrontation with landscapes of this scale quickly reminds us of our own incidental transience. This landscape instills a sense of nostalgia with its shifting pools and ever-changing dunes; what is will never be again.

As a woman portraying other women, it is important to create a space to express individual freedom and subsequent images that are supportive of our inherent femininity. There is something magical about experiencing your own nudity within the backdrop of nature. That feeling is only made stronger when mirrors are taken away and modern comforts are nowhere in sight.

In today’s society, we are so inundated with other people’s opinions and viewpoints that it is a special thing to, even if for only a few days, leave it all behind and just listen to the rhythms of one’s own mind.
